Purchase related questions

Q: What license size do I need to buy?
A: Activity Monitor licensing is based on the number of computers you are going to monitor, i.e. the number of computers where you install Agent in your organization. You will not be able to monitor more computers than the license size you purchase. Activity Monitor is available in several packages of fixed license size: 3, 6, 12, 25, 50, Site, Enterprise. For example, if you have 10 computers in your LAN that you want to monitor you should consider buying 12 computers license. Site license allows you to install Activity Monitor Agent on unlimited number of computers located in one physical office or no more than 100 miles from the address of purchase. Enterprise license is for the companies that want to use the software in multiple offices located worldwide.
Q: I have 5 computers license. How can I add a few more licenses to monitor our new computers?

Technical questions

Q: Computer in the Remote Agents list shows up as Offline, but actually it is turned on
A: First make sure that you installed Agent on the remote computer. Then check if Activity Monitor and Agent are not blocked by the firewalls. You can allow all communications for them in the firewall settings or open ports described in one of the questions below
Q: Anti-spyware or Antivirus software prevents me from installing Activity Monitor, Agent or Activity Logger. Or it disables my monitoring software
A: If you are knowingly installing Activity Monitor, Activity Monitor Agent or Activity Logger software on and you own this computer or have owner's authorization, you may easily disable warnings in AntiSpyware. So monitored users will not be able to detect presence of monitoring software
We have created instructions for setting up Excludes for SoftActivity software in several popular anti-spyware programs
Read these easy to follow instruction:
How to use Activity Monitor with Symantec Antivirus
SoftActivity software with McAfee AntiSpyware
Similar steps can be taken to run Activity Monitor and Activity Logger with other anti-virus and anti-spyware programs you may have.
Q: I have installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 and now Agents appear offline in Activity Monitor
A: Service Pack 2 installs Windows Firewall that is turned on by default. First, you need to upgrade your Activity Monitor to the latest available version. You should then allow all communication for Activity Monitor when Windows Firewall asks you. When you install Agent it creates a special rule in Windows Firewall that opens port #15164. This will allow to monitor this computer from Activity Monitor. You should be logged on as the user with Administrator privileges when installing Agent locally. When installing Agent remotely you should have Administrator rights on this computer.
Q: How can I install Agent on the remote computer?
A: The easiest way is to install Agent remotely. Click File-Install Agent menu in Activity Monitor. Enter or select computer name (you may also enter IP address there). You should be either logged on as a user with Administrator privileges on the remote computer or enter the password for the user with such rights. So only computer Administrators can install Agent remotely. Remote installation works only if both computers are at least Windows 2000.
You may also install Agent locally on that computer. Go to that computer and run amagent3x.exe file from the floppy or shared network location.
Q: Can Activity Monitor connect to the computers through Internet?
Basically it can, but there are certain limitations. You need direct IP connection between computers, proxy servers are not supported basically. You should be able to ping the remote computer. Also it's desirable if both computers have static IP addresses. You may install Agent remotely only if you know local Administrator password for that computer. Monitoring will not be fast on the slow Internet connection as Activity Monitor is designed for using on LAN.
We recommend using our Activity Logger program for the computers located outside your LAN. It can record same log file and email it to you periodically.
Q: How to uninstall Agent from the remote computer?
A: In the full version you may uninstall Agent remotely. Right click the computer in Remote Agents list in Activity Monitor. Then click Uninstall Agent. Agent will be uninstalled from the selected remote computer silently. Other way to uninstall Agent is to run unins000.exe located in Agent folder (by default, c:\program files\amsys) on the remote computer. This is the only way available in the evaluation version. After uninstalling Agent you may delete it from the list in Activity Monitor.
Q: How to get to know if employees play games or surf web during work time?
A: Install Activity Monitor on your computer. Install Agent on the networked computers you want to monitor. Enable Offline Logging and Offline Screenshots on those PCs in the Agent Properties window in Activity Monitor. After some time download log files and screenshots from those computers. Export them into MS Excel and look at Summary Table tab to see a list of applications users have worked with. Or you may export log files to HTML and find what users have run, look at the screenshots, taken during the work time.
Q: What network protocols does Activity Monitor use?
A: It uses TCP IP. Activity Monitor uses IP ports 15163(TCP), 15165(UDP) and 15166 (TCP). Agent program uses port 15164(UDP) and 15166(TCP). They should be free to work properly. If you have firewall installed, you need to enable communications through these ports for Activity Monitor
Q: I have installed Activity Monitor Agent on some computer in LAN. And this computer does not appear in Remote Agents list in Activity Monitor.
A: This may happen if the client computer is in another network segment. So this computer cannot be detected automatically. In this case you should add it manually. Click "Add computer" and enter its IP address or host name, then click OK.
Another possible reason can be the firewall installed on your or remote computer that blocks Activity Monitor communications.
Q: I can see the remote computer is online in list. But when I doubleclick on this computer Activity Monitor does not connect to it.
A: Possibly be Activity Monitor from other PC is connected to this Agent. Only one Activity Monitor at a time may connect to the Agent program. Other possible reason is that communications between Activity Monitor and Agent are partially blocked by the firewall
Q: I tried to reinstall Activity Monitor Agent, but I cannot do it because of sharing violation error messages.
A: It means that Activity Monitor Agent is running now. Try to uninstall it first, restart computer and then run installation again
Q: Can I change the look of resulting exported HTML (Excel or CSV file),
A: All log exports in Activity Monitor are based on the templates. You may edit these template files to get desired look of the generated files. Templates may contain predefined macros (e.g. %USER%, %TIME%), which are substituted by corresponding values during export. For full available macros list read Activity Monitor documentation.
For HTML Export the templates are: first.html, head.html, logrec.html, scrshot.html, bottom.html, last.html. You should have basic knowledge of HTML. Template for MS Excel export is log.xls, CSV export template is delim.txt file. All template files are located in \Templates subfolder of Activity Monitor folder. Do not forget to backup those files before editing.
Q: Can I store recorded logs in the database for advanced long period analysis?
A: To add logs into a database, you should export them to CSV file using Activity Monitor Log Export feature. You may choose necessary fields and delimiters by editing the template file Templates\delim.txt. Then you may import the resulting CSV file into any database or open it in a spreadsheet program as most of them support CSV files.
Problem: Connecting to the remote agents from the console always displays the agents as disconnected. Windows XP SP2, laptop
Solution: The Activity Monitor Software will always display the agents as disconnected if you have two IP addresses to the workstation. This was a problem because during install I did not have the wireless card enabled. I was trying to run the monitoring software with the laptop on the docking station and with the wireless card enabled.
I found this by trying to re-install the application and it asking which interface to use for primary communication. I have since disabled the wireless connection and it works perfectly. Another way to fix this would be to open Options in Activity Monitor, go to Binding settings and select IP address of the network interface that connects you to Agents.
